..."Robin Antin didn't figure out the equation until years after she started the Pussycat Dolls.

"I'm inspired by everything from the oldest burlesque dancers, like Lili St. Cyr, to the Sex Pistols. I've realized that if you put those two things together, it makes `The Rocky Horror Show.' "

And "Rocky Horror" was an early influence on the pop-culture fusion that led to Antin's new twist on old-school burlesque. The song-and-dance troupe now has its own dedicated club, the Pussycat Dolls Lounge, inside Caesars Palace.

A chat with the animated choreographer turns up other inspirations for the Los Angeles club phenomenon that revived the campy spirit of striptease with a modern flair. Ann-Margret. Marilyn Monroe. Cyd Charisse. And don't forget Bob Fosse, whose choreography marked "a turning point for me in my life. It was just so rich and so different."

A guest appearance by Eva Longoria of "Desperate Housewives" officially launches the new venue during a private party on Saturday, before it opens to the public at 10 p.m.

Celebrity turns by the likes of Carmen Electra, Christina Applegate and Gwen Stefani fueled the buzz factor for the troupe, leading to a partnership with local nightclub entrepreneur Robert Frey.

"We kind of liked the fact that they had celebrity performers all the time," Frey says. He calls the new club -- adjacent to the larger Pure (both replacing the space once occupied by Caesars Magical Empire) -- "our year 2005 interpretation of what a lounge was 40 years ago."

"It blends in a lot of elements, nightclub, show, lounge, and fuses the three of them together," he says of the lounge that will be open earlier -- 4 p.m. -- and more days of the week than Pure.

"When people tell me other clubs are doing burlesque, I say fine," Antin says, waving a dismissive hand. "We've moved so far beyond that."

So far beyond that a whole new pack of Dolls was recruited to perform in the Las Vegas club, freeing the original cast to pursue movies and pop music. The Dolls had a song called "Sway" on the soundtrack to "Shall We Dance," and appeared in "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle."

And they soon plan to film a music video for a new single called "Don't Cha," due April 19.

"This club, this lounge, is where the Pussycat Dolls have evolved as far as a live show," Antin said during a break in rehearsals earlier this week. The room has a formal stage, but the women also do short numbers on the bartop and on pod stages featuring a swing and a champagne glass.

The Las Vegas troupe is fronted by pop singer Kelly Levesque, who had a song ("Some Hearts") on the "America's Sweethearts" soundtrack and will pursue her recording career in Las Vegas.

"The great thing about the concept is (customers) get to go back to what they were doing," Antin says of breaking the show into short bursts.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles troupe is "evolving into something more (national), doing music that's more contemporary but could have a retro bit in there. I can take any song in the world and make it Pussycat Dolls."

Antin's approach reflects a Hollywood upbringing in a show business family. Father Michael is an artist and mother Brenda is a former film executive and interior decorator.

One brother Johnathan, is a hair stylist featured in the Bravo reality series "Blow Out." The other, Steve, acted in "The Goonies" and now is a filmmaker who lends a supporting hand to his sister's Dolls work.

Robin was working as a choreographer for music videos and TV commercials when she met Applegate in a dance class. The two became best friends and eventually roommates, working out routines in the actress' home dance studio.

Choreography usually starts with the steps, "but for me it started with the costumes," Antin says. "I actually made the costumes before I came up with the show. It was based around the clothing."

Applegate saw the work that was becoming "a cross between Ann-Margret and a James Bond girl." She used a mutual friend to bring it to the attention of Johnny Depp as a potential weekly feature for his Viper Room on the Sunset Strip.

"(Depp) was looking at us like, `This is crazy,' " Antin recalls of the 1995 meeting. "Then I remember him saying to us, `This is why I opened the club.' "

The Dolls revue eventually expanded into the larger Roxy, drawing proportionately more attention. Celebrity guests such as Charlize Theron, Brittany Murphy and Christina Aguilera helped get the troupe on magazine covers.

Beyond any empowerment that comes from wearing fishnets and spiked heels, Antin says Doll-dom appeals to the musical theater and dance training usually buried in a TV star's past.

"Who knew that Christina Applegate could sing and dance? And now she's doing `Sweet Charity' on Broadway!" she notes. "It's like an acting role, in a way. You're almost in character when you're onstage."

Antin envisions cosmetics, lingerie and workout videos to further her theory that "Inside every woman is a Pussycat Doll." But the secret ingredient, she says, is confidence.

"I may find the most beautiful girl in the world, but if she doesn't have that confidence and that appeal, no one's really going to care.".....

Nicole Elikolani Prescovia Scherzinger (born June 29, 1978),
is an American singer and dancer best known for her work as the lead vocalist for The Pussycat Dolls. 

Early life


Scherzinger was born in Honolulu, Hawaii to a Filipino father and a Hawaiian/Russian mother. She grew up in Louisville, Kentucky with stepfather Gary Scherzinger, mother Rosemary and sister Ke'ala. She began her life as a performer in Louisville, attending the Youth Performing Arts School at duPont Manual High School and performing with Actors Theatre of Louisville. Scherzinger majored in theater arts at Wright State University, but put her studies on hold in 1999 to sing backing vocals for the rock band Days of the New.

Recording career

Eden's Crush


In 2001, Scherzinger competed in the premiere season of The WB's television show Popstars, on which she earned a spot in the all-girl pop group Eden's Crush. The group's 2001 single "Get Over Yourself" peaked at #1 in sales and hit the top five on Billboard Hot 100. "Love This Way" was the second single chosen from the Popstars album; however, their record company, London-Sire Records, folded and the group eventually disbanded. Songwriter Kara DioGuardi contributed one track to the album, and later went on to co-write with Scherzinger for PCD.

In June 2003, following her stint with Eden's Crush, Scherzinger joined The Pussycat Dolls burlesque troupe, who were being re-cast as recording artists. She had first seen them performing on The Late Show with David Letterman in 2002, where Carmen Electra sang "Big Spender" from the Bob Fosse musical Sweet Charity. In 2006, Scherzinger said "It caught my eye because I’d played Velma Kelly in Chicago in college." [1]

The Pussycat Dolls now have world-wide status as a popular singing group; their Billboard top five hits include "Don't Cha", "Buttons" and "Stickwitu" and the top 20 hit "Beep". The album PCD went double-platinum in 2006. Scherzinger sang nearly all lead and backing vocals on the album, with Melody Thornton and Carmit Bachar also contributing.

Scherzinger is the only group member with songwriting credits on this album; she co-wrote "I Don't Need a Man" with Kara DioGuardi and producer Rich Harrison, and co-wrote "Buttons" with producer Sean Garrett. Another collaboration with DioGuardi, "Flirt", became "Stickwitu" B-side and a bonus track on PCD.

In 2006, Scherzinger toured with The Pussycat Dolls for their album promotion. It was revealed in 2006 that the Dolls are salaried employees of Interscope Records, giving the label a high level of control over the group's finances and business decisions. As reported, the group is currently working on their yet-untitled sophomore album.

Solo career


After the disbandment of Eden's Crush, Scherzinger made a few promotional solo appearances under the stage name Nicole Kea, including covering "Breakfast in Bed" for the soundtrack to 50 First Dates. To date, this is her only solo release. She then appeared on recordings by Shaggy, Vittorio Grigolo, and Will Smith. In 2006 Scherzinger sang on Avant's single "Lie About Us", and Diddy's hit single "Come to Me" (which she also co-wrote).

Since late 2005 Scherzinger has also been working on her yet-to-be-titled solo album , involving producers Akon, Timbaland, Sean Garrett, Polow Da Don, Kara DioGuardi, Will.i.am, Bryan Michael Cox, and co-producer Wyldcard. The album is scheduled for an early 2007 release. [2] Her first single, which has not been officially named, is set to be released in February and the album soon after.

Personal life

Scherzinger was once engaged to lead singer of the 311, Nick Hexum. She appeared in the video for their hit song "Amber". Hexum produced the song that Scherzinger sang on for the 50 First Dates soundtrack, as they were still dating at the time. Eventually, the two decided to go separate ways as her career was starting to take off, and 311's tour schedule was growing more demanding.

Jessica Sutta (b. 15 May, 1982) is an American dancer, singer and actress. She is best known as a member of the successful pop group The Pussycat Dolls.



Sutta was born in Miami, Florida to a Jewish father of Russian/Polish origin and a mother of Irish descent. She started dance classes at the age of three. She went to the New World School of the Arts at age fourteen to study dance. She suffered an injury to both knees and switched to theater studies, before finally returning to dance. She joined the Miami Heat dance team in 1999 and became captain in 2001. She also acted in the Swedish TV soap opera Ocean Ave., which is shot in Florida.



In 2002 Sutta moved to Los Angeles, and as a freelance dancer appeared in music videos for Will Smith, Beyoncé ("Crazy in Love", Craig David and Gloria Estefan, among others. She came to the attention of choreographer Robin Antin who cast her in the re-vamped Pussycat Dolls in 2002. As with all the other Dolls, Sutta is a salaried employee of Interscope Records. Ashley Roberts (born 14 September, 1981) is an American singer/dancer in the modern burlesque troupe The Pussycat Dolls, and a glamour model. She was born in Phoenix, Arizona.

She began dancing at the age of three, and singing at the age of eight. Her father was a drummer who played for the Mamas and the Papas. He later became a car dealer. Her mother was a Pilates instructor.

During high school summer breaks she had travelled to the West Coast to study modern dance. After high school she moved permanently to Los Angeles. She appeared in TV commercials and a Counting Crows music video "Accidentally in Love". Within six months of her move she was also a Pussycat Doll. As with the other group members she is a salaried employee of Interscope Records.

Her nickname in the band was "Barbie doll", but to avoid trouble from Mattel (who own the rights to the Barbie Doll) changed it to "angel doll".

Kimberly Wyatt BioGraphy

Down-home Southern girl Kimberly Wyatt also happens to be, according to Antin, “the sexiest dancer I have ever seen in my life.” Says Wyatt, “I’m a lot shyer than most of the girls, but my personality onstage is full-out. I really go for it.”



Born in Warrensburg, MO, a tiny farm town near the Ozarks, her father is a trucker and her mother goes on the road with him. Having danced since she was seven, by the time Wyatt was 14 she was earning scholarships to study in New York each summer, from the Joffrey Ballet to the Broadway Dance Center. Graduating high school at 17, she promptly flew to Las Vegas to audition for cruise ship and casino shows. Landing a revue on Royal Caribbean’s Explorer of the Seas, then the largest cruise ship in the world, she was able to visit most of Southern Europe.



In 2001, she moved to L.A., despite an offer from the Hubbard St. Dance Co. in Chicago. “All I knew was that L.A. is where dancers got jobs and L.A. was the dot MapQuest led to. My parents thought, ‘Oh my God, what is she going to turn into out there?’”



In 2003, Antin was the choreographer for a video for Nick Lachey’s solo album when she met Wyatt. Antin asked her that night to join The Pussycat Dolls. “I had only seen a poster for them,” Wyatt recalls. “I remember falling in love with the girls. Not many acts let you be sexy and still be about girl power.”



“Small town Middle America is different from the coasts,” she says, “and all the girls come from big cities. I have a different perspective. They love my stories about towns where the fancy clothing store is Wal-Mart.”

 

Melody Thornton BioGraPhy

Melody Thornton was a rising young star in hometown Phoenix, singing backup for local artists and performing the National Anthem for the Arizona Diamondbacks while attending college. Her Mexican maternal grandmother had been a singer for mariachi bands; her African-American paternal grandfather was a blues guitarist and her mother was a Mexican folklore dancer. Being the only Latina and African-American in The Pussycat Dolls means a great deal to her. “I think a lot of the audience can relate to me,” she says, “and that adds to the Dolls.”



The first time she saw The Pussycat Dolls was on Christina Aguilera’s “MTV Diary.” “I loved the concept.” She recorded the show and played it back over and over. Studying that tape paid off. Melody was welcomed aboard in December

 

Carmit Bachar Biography

Carmit Bachar, the fire-hot redhead, is as talented as she is beautiful. Her mother is of Dutch/Indonesian decent and her father is Israeli. Being a native of Los Angeles and coming from a family of entertainers has led her down the path of working with some of the most successful artists in music: No Doubt, Beyonce, P. Diddy, Macy Gray and Janet Jackson to name a few. She has numerous feature film and commercial credits - her "bon-bon" was most recognized as Ricky Martin's La Vida Loca girl! Carmit is one of the most respected dancers and choreographers in the business.



Not to be limited to just one genre, she attended Hamilton Academy of Music, in order to hone her sultry voice and piano chops. She was also a rhythmic gymnastics national team member and placed 5th at the '92 Olympic Trials.



Carmit has been putting her heart and soul into the Dolls since the underground movement began. "Individual personality makes this group sassy," she says, which is where her nickname 'Foxy' comes from. "You have to be comfortable in your skin and exude confidence."



Born with a cleft lip/palate, Carmit's success has given her the desire to give back to children. She is in the process of founding a non-profit organization, Smile With Me, for the community of cleft children in Los Angeles. Carmit believes in limitless possibility and having overcome her own obstacles, she feels compelled to instill passion and creativity wherever she goes. With her inspirational personality, powerful presence and determination, she is sharing that light with one child at a time.
